high-functioning anxiety

It took years of dealing with undiagnosed anxiety to realize the symptoms that I have are actually part of a mental illness. Anxiety, and what I’m going to add high-functioning to (because I do all I can to power through every day of it), can be a multitude of so many underlying emotions and fears. These are difficult to see within yourself, and even tougher to sort out.

Here are 11 signs you might be living with high-functioning anxiety:

  1. Pushing your tasks off as long as possible before overworking towards burnout.
  2. Feeling like your work needs to be perfect, overly analyzing every detail for fear of performance dissatisfaction.
  3. Having the urge to say yes to everything, even if you are already very overwhelmed because you don’t want to disappoint anyone.
  4. Frequently second-guessing your decisions.
  5. Feeling as though you can’t stop working, or can’t stop your mind from constantly going through everything that needs to be done.
  6. You have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep almost every single night.
  7. Excessively worrying, even if there’s no clear reason for it.
  8. Difficulty focusing on your daily tasks, feeling out of control.
  9. Muscle tension, including clenching your jaw, flexing your muscles throughout the day, balling your fists or toes.
  10. Regular stomach pains, cramps, nausea, or indigestion.
  11. Stage fright – more than simply being nervous for a phone call or a meeting. It’s dwelling on the situation for days leading up to it, feeling extreme nerves during, and dwelling on people’s reactions for a while afterward.
